Biography

Descended from an old Wiltshire family, Bocland sold the family estate of Standlynch in 1726 to settle in Hampshire. Returned for Yarmouth on the government interest in 1733, and for Lymington on the interest of Paul Burrard next year, he voted with the Administration in every recorded division. He served in the campaign in Flanders in 1743-6 and was wounded at Fontenoy. In 1749 his maternal aunt left him the estate of Knighton in the Isle of Wight, which became his principal residence. On 11 Feb. 1754 he wrote to the Duke of Newcastle:

I have reason to expect from a late conversation with Mr. Holmes, that I am in danger of losing my seat in the next Parliament for Yarmouth in this island, which I did not in the least expect, because I knew I was in your list for that place ... I flatter myself I shall have your interest with Mr. Holmes.1

but he was not returned. He died 15 Aug. 1765.
