Biography

Burton, whose father had bought Ashwell in 1690, purchased North Luffenham from the 4th Earl of Gainsborough in 1729.1 Successful for Rutland as a Whig at a by-election in 1730, he seconded the Address on 21 Jan. 1731,2 and on 16 Mar. 1732 supported a motion that a qualification in the public funds might be as valid as a landed qualification.3 He did not stand in 1734. Three years later, Walpole gave him a place on the excise board, which he held until ill-health forced him to retire in 1776. He died 30 Jan. 1781.4
