After voting for the septennial bill in 1716, he followed Argyll into opposition, losing his place in 1717, but supporting the Government in 1719, when Argyll returned to office. Defeated in 1722 but awarded the seat on petition, he stood down in favour of his son John in 1727. He died 9 Apr. 1729.
