Biography

Captain Chapman, as he was called, sat for Buckingham as a Tory in two Parliaments under Queen Anne but was defeated there in 1715. His name was sent to the Pretender in 1721 as a probable supporter in the event of a rising. He was brought in for Amersham at a by-election in 1722 by M. G. Drake, but no votes of his have been recorded, nor did he stand again. Described by Browne Willis as ‘an excellent justice of the peace, but squandered his estate’,1 he sold Caldecote in 1744. The date of his death has not been ascertained.
