Biography

A friend of Lord Henry Newport’s,1 Charlton, after an uneventful career in the navy, was returned for Bridgnorth on the Whitmore interest. An independent Whig, he voted consistently with the Opposition. In 1734 he gave up the seat to Thomas Whitmore, soon afterwards returning to sea under his old admiral, Sir John Norris.2 He died Sept. 1742.
