Biography

Mountrath was the great-grandson of Sir Charles Coote, of an Anglo-Irish family, who obtained an Irish earldom at the Restoration for his services to Charles II. Returned as a Whig for Knaresborough after a contest in 1715, he was absent from the division on the septennial bill in 1716 but voted with the Government on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts and the peerage bill, on which he was put down by Craggs as to be approached through Newcastle’s brother-in-law, Lord Lincoln, in 1719. He died 27 Mar. 1720.
