Cope was returned for Banbury on his family’s interest, succeeding his kinsman, Sir Jonathan Cope. In the next Parliament he sat for Newport on the government interest. He voted with the Government, was classed as ‘Pelham’ in the Cockpit list of 1742, and as an Old Whig in the list of 1746. He died 29 June 1763, aged 67.
