Biography

Deacle was the nephew and heir of a wealthy London woollen draper, of an Evesham family, who stood unsuccessfully for Evesham in 1708, leaving £2,000 to found a free school there.1 After succeeding to his uncle’s fortune of £50,0002 he contested Aylesbury unsuccessfully in 1713. Returned for both Aylesbury and Evesham in 1715, he made his election for Evesham, voting consistently with the Administration. Defeated in 1722, he died of the palsy 25 Oct. 1723. According to his funeral oration,

when he had the honour of serving his country as Member of Parliament his love to his country carried him to that degree of attendance and assiduity as was beyond what could be expected from anyone under the infirmities that pressed upon his constitution. The many hours he hath sat in that House! Under pains and difficulties that would have kept any one away that had less love to his King and Country, the Protestant Religion, and the liberties of Europe ... It was for the same principles that he would, upon necessary occasions, come up to the Public service in this country under great disabilities, when some others could hardly be persuaded to go cross a street. He had in his young days lived some time in France, and seen the effects of the want of liberty ... His stated communion was among the Protestant Dissenters, and frequently with the French Churches, especially in former years.
