Biography

John Douglas, who bought Broughton in 1719, was returned unopposed in 1722 on the interest of his brother, the 2nd Earl, hereditary sheriff of Peebles. Re-elected after a contest in 1727, he voted with the Administration until his death, 16 Mar. 1732. His estates were sold in 1736 to pay his debts and those of his father, which together amounted to £S205,827 16s. 8d. (about £17,000 sterling).1
