Biography

John Gumley, a wealthy plate-glass manufacturer and army contractor,2 owed his appointment in 1716 to his son-in-law William Pulteney, then secretary-at-war, whose avaricious wife was said to have taken the salary of her father’s post, leaving him only the perquisites.3 In 1722 he contested Bramber unsuccessfully, but was returned for the adjacent borough of Steyning. He did not stand in 1727, dying 19 Dec. 1728.
