Biography

Walter Lloyd established his family as a political power in Cardiganshire by his marriage to the heiress of Peterwell, an estate which gave him control of Lampeter, one of the Cardigan boroughs, and an important interest in the county. As an active Whig partisan, he was appointed local law officer of the Crown immediately after the Hanoverian succession. Returned for the county without opposition in 1734, he supported Walpole’s Administration. Unseated by the Opposition after Walpole’s fall in 1742, he stood unsuccessfully for Cardigan Boroughs in 1746, dying in February 1747.
