Biography

When in 1727 Lord Grimston suggested to Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, that he and her grandson, John Spencer, should stand jointly against Lomax for St. Albans, she declined on the ground that ‘Mr. Lomax’s interest is so strong that your Lordship and my grandson cannot be chosen without spending and bribing to the amount of a thousand pounds’.1 Returned after a contest, he voted for the Government on the civil list arrears in 1729, and died 7 Mar. 1730.
