Biography
Richard Lumley, 1st Earl of Scarbrough, was descended from an ancient Durham family, who in the sixteenth century acquired by marriage the Sussex estates of the earls of Arundel. A signatory of the invitation to William of Orange, he obtained from Queen Anne the grant of the office of surveyor of petty customs and subsidies at the port of London, a sinecure worth £1,200 a year, for the lives of his sons Richard and Thomas, later 2nd and 3rd Earls of Scarbrough, which he bequeathed in equal shares to his three younger sons, Charles, John, and James. Returned unopposed for Chichester in 1727, on the joint interests of the 2nd Lord Scarbrough and the Duke of Richmond, Charles Lumley died 11 Aug. 1728.
