Biography

The last male representative of a line which had been seated at Dunster Castle since 1375, Alexander Luttrell was returned as a Tory on his family’s interest for Minehead at the first opportunity after coming of age, voting regularly against the Government. He died 4 June 1737, aged 32, leaving to his only child, a daughter, an estate so heavily indebted that it was put into Chancery. According to his daughter’s husband, Henry Fownes Luttrell, the borough of Minehead was ‘the rock which my father Luttrell foundered upon’.1
