Biography

Henry Peirse inherited from his grandfather the manor of Bedale, which his family had bought early in the seventeenth century. On coming of age in 1713 he was returned for the neighbouring borough of Northallerton, where he controlled one seat. He did not stand in 1715 but was re-elected in 1722, voting steadily with the Government except on the place bill of 1740, which he supported, and on the chairman of the elections committee in 1741, when he was absent. Though he never received a place, the 2nd Lord Egmont in his plans for a new Parliament puts him down as a man who ‘may be had as I take it by any Government’. Retiring in 1754, he died 2 Oct. 1759.
