Biography

At the age of 21 Shelley was brought into Parliament by his uncle, the Duke of Newcastle, who later endowed him with the sinecures of keeper of the records in the Tower and clerk of the pipe, both for life. A place in the customs, being incompatible with a seat in the House of Commons, was held in trust for him, bringing his emoluments to upwards of £1,500 p.a. He died 11 Sept. 1783.
