Biography

In 1741 William Stewart, a professional soldier like his brother, stood unsuccessfully for Kircud-bright Stewartry but was returned unopposed for Wigtown Burghs on his family’s interest. He voted for Walpole’s candidate for the chairman of the elections committee in December; was absent on the Hanoverians in 1742 and 1746; voted against them in 1744, his eldest brother, Lord Garlies, being then in opposition; and in 1746 was classed as an Old Whig. He did not stand again. The date of his death is not known, but possibly it was he—it could not have been his brother James—who died on 3 May 1748.1
