Biography

Webb’s father, of a Somerset family, who made his fortune as a merchant in the West Indies.2 bought considerable properties in and around Taunton. Returned unopposed for Taunton on the dissenting interest in 1747, standing jointly with Sir Charles Wyndham,3 he was classed as a government supporter. At the general election of 1754 he withdrew, refusing to face the expense of a contest. He died 9 Sept. 1765.
