Returned unopposed in 1754 Budgen was classed by Dupplin as ‘country gentleman, for’. He intended to stand again in 1761, and received support from Newcastle but at the county meeting there was such ‘great discontent and dissatisfaction’1 at his nomination that ‘the whole ended in a scene of confusion’,2 and he was obliged to withdraw.

Budgen died 3 Mar. 1772.
