Biography

In 1756 Francis Child became a partner in the family bank; and in 1761 was returned without a contest for Bishop’s Castle, which his father had represented 1747-52. The election cost him £1200, and he had presumably the support of the Walcot family who were heavily in debt to Child’s bank. In Bute’s list of December 1761 Child is classed as a Tory. He is not in the list Fox drew up early in December 1762 of Members favourable to the peace preliminaries, but did not vote against them. Altogether no vote or speech by him is recorded. He died 23 Sept. 1763, shortly before he was to be married to a daughter of Robert Trevor Hampden (subsequently 4th Baron Trevor and 1st Viscount Hampden); he left her £50,000.
