Biography

Elwill sat for Guildford on the Onslow interest, and while Newcastle was in office supported the court. He appears in Henry Fox’s list of Members favourable to the peace preliminaries, but over Wilkes and general warrants voted with the Opposition. He was classed by Rockingham in July 1765 as ‘doubtful’, but did not vote against the repeal of the Stamp Act. Rockingham in November 1766, Townshend in January 1767, and Newcastle in March 1767 all class him ‘doubtful’. He did not stand in 1768.

He died 1 Mar. 1778.
