Biography

John Gore carried on business in Bishopsgate Street in partnership with Joseph Mellish, later his son-in-law, with whose support he was returned for Grimsby. He began as a Hamburg merchant, but his concerns grew more widespread: he was one of the original directors of the South Sea Company; held extensive Government contracts for remittances and victualling troops;1 was a large subscriber to Government loans; and one of the City men consulted by Newcastle on Treasury affairs. Gore and Mellish suffered considerably in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, Gore’s loss being estimated at £30,000.2

He died 3 Aug. 1763.
