Biography

Richard Herbert sat at Ludlow on the interest of his brother, Lord Powis. For some time before 1754 Powis had been trying to secure some provision for him. But it was only after Henry Pelham’s death that Newcastle was able to satisfy Herbert with the offer of the wardenship of the mint. But as a second vacancy on the Board of Green Cloth had been simultaneously set aside for John Grey, who was not even in Parliament at that time, Herbert considered it beneath his dignity to accept the wardenship unless the salary was made equal to Grey’s.1

Eventually, on 2 Apr., this was agreed upon and a private addition of £400 p.a. arranged. But the long sought for preferment was not long enjoyed, for, one month after the general election, Herbert died, 17 May 1754.2
