Biography

Lowther, like the rest of Sir James Lowther’s Members, followed his patron’s politics; voted with Opposition till the fall of North; for Shelburne’s peace preliminaries, 18 Feb. 1783, and against Fox’s East India bill, 27 Nov. 1783. He at first supported Pitt’s Administration, but like the other Lowther Members voted with Opposition on the Regency, 1788-9. There is no record of his having spoken in the House.

Lowther seems to have been more intimately connected with Sir James than other members of the family, and remained his faithful henchman while others sought independence elsewhere or were dropped.  He died in 1837 at Caen.
