Dawson was not yet of age when his father died, but it was anticipated that in due course he too would offer for Monaghan. He did so in 1812 and was returned unopposed. The viceroy reported to the premier that although Dawson’s aged great-uncle and sponsor Cremorne, whose heir he was, insisted on his supporting government, he was doubtful ‘whether he will continue to do so after the death of Lord Cremorne’. Dawson was in the minority for Burdett’s Regency motion, 23 Feb. 1813, and would have voted for Catholic relief on 2 Mar. had he not known that Cremorne was dead, an event that disqualified him. He died 21 Mar. 1827.
