Unsuccessful Candidates

The following is a list of 362 unsuccessful candidates who went to a poll in this period, omitting those who certainly secured election elsewhere before 1820. Constituencies and elections contested are supplied; by-elections are bracketed. The names daggered are those of Members who sat before 1790; names asterisked are those of future Members. The six names preceded by the symbol ‡ were members of the Irish house of commons before the Union. Unconfirmed birth and death dates have been added where possible after the candidates’ names, for purposes of identification. In the case of the 11 names italicized some doubt remains about the candidate’s identity.
