A political maverick and country gentleman who sat for South Derbyshire for over 20 years in two stints, Colvile began his career as a staunch protectionist Tory and ended it as a radical Liberal. His amendment to the 1867 reform bill lowered the copyhold franchise and his 1848 act gave tenant farmers the right to shoot game without a certificate.
