Grandson of the marquess of Anglesey, a celebrated Whig soldier, Paget was a silent supporter of Palmerston during his brief, unremarkable spell representing South Staffordshire in the 1850s. He succeeded as 3rd marquess in 1869 and was ‘well known on the turf’.
